ANIMATION  WORKSHOPS

a quick group exercise with clay heads

Making Animation is a great way to understand more about storytelling and the sequencing of ideas. It is fun, creative and collaborative. Students are introduced to new art techniques and also become
aware of career options they may not have known about. As the underlying principles are the same as for Video,Animation workshops leave students better prepared for undertaking more sophisticated
media projects.

Children and adults enjoy being introduced to various techniques for making their art move. Whether it's plasticene and a camera, pencil and a scanner, or cut up photos we focus on creating a 'cycle' first up. This is much more rewarding for the first time animator as they can watch it 'looped' over and over instead of seeing their hours of work go by in a flash.
Most of the students work shown here was created in their first basic animation class.

The skills taught are tailored to the age and aptitude of the students and to the technical
resources available to them, so they can carry on animating long after the workshop is over. The workshops are very popular with teachers of art and media, who can take a swag of new skills back to their students to incorporate into their art and computer work.
The storyboards we do, the preparing of sequences, the designing and timing of scenes
all contribute greatly to the literacy and numeracy skills of the students
(without them even noticing).

The opportunity for sequential storytelling with pictures and subsequent publishing to
the world on the internet can bring amazing results. Many Teachers have been surprised
at the kind of students who have shined in this medium finding an aptitude and a passion
where there was little before.
